According to Hubarevich, the MFF’s structures were mostly estranged from participation in the observation campaign during the presidential election of 2010 that was meant to be a joint one. This was one of the reasons why the MFF had decided to conduct its own observation campaign that turned out to be quite successful.
To avoid the mistakes of observation made at the previous election, the MFF proposed the campaign participants to divide various lines of activity among themselves prior to the campaign’s start (nomination to commissions and to observers, information work, development of changes to legislation, etc.), and to found the coordinating council with the participation of all parties concerned that are able to make a real contribution to the campaign. However, this offer was ignored.
“The role of the Just World Party – and it is this party that is the main initiator of the For Fair Election campaign – in the election campaign isn’t entirely clear. It is known that the former communists don’t intend to support the joint agreement of the majority of political entities concerning the compulsory withdrawal of candidates before voting. Moreover, the positions of the For Fair Election campaign’s coordinators have been distributed disregarding the opinion of the MFF and the Belarusian Popular Front (BPF) Party that are the structures that have considerable experience in observation and nomination to commissions. Therefore, it is quite possible that we would have to work independently,” comments Hubarevich on the situation.
“Yet, we support everything that was said by the initiators of the For Fair Election campaign, and hope that we would manage to find common ground and to coordinate our activities at later phases of our work,” notes the MFF Deputy Chairman.
As was previously reported, coordinator of the For Fair Election campaign Viktar Karnieyenka has declared that the agreement was reached with the majority of political structures in Belarus to work together to prepare and conduct the observation. However, according to Karnieyenka, not all have joined yet, including the MFF.
